Drill

Finishing combo with overlap and underlap

An engaging and continuous passing pattern with a good cross and finish to goal. This drill pairs well with the basic underlap/overlap drills and is best performed in-context of a striped pitch. You can open this up (larger) or keep it tight on small puggs. Somewhat complex pattern to reset the drill tends to engage kids and they self-organize flow after climbing the learning curve.

Setup

Set up a sequence of cones on roughly 35-45 yards of field, ideally towards goal area as diagram shows, with undefended goal. Start one player on each cone and have 1-2 extra players in line with a ball at the starting block. You can double this drill in opposing directions (and have shooter switch to the other side after gathering ball).

Instructions

Finishing drill with Overlap and underlap A pass to B (and move to B) B pass to C (and overlap C) C pass to D (and underlap D) D pass to B (and move to C) B pass to C (and move to D) C finishes on net (and switches sides to A)

Progressions

If you double this drill or alternate side over time (down the left wing, down the right wing), it is good crossing finishing practice There are a few other variations (e.g. one with an added 1-2 then overlap) in my deeper notes, but I tend to run this

Coaching Emphasis

Time your runs and aim/weight your passes where your next target would want to receive it. This is meant to be a controlled drill (i.e. with crosses on the deck) with near 100% shot conversion.
