Pairs Aggressive Receiving Relay Race

This is a simple pairs relay race that allows you to train positive first touch in a competitive format. This is also decent conditioning as they’re racing.

Pitch size 25 x 30 yds (or more)

Setup

Set up pairs with cones 15 yds apart for each pair (straight line), spaced ~6-8 yards apart. One ball per pair, players facing each other, behind cones.

Instructions

Object is to complete 8 reps of the pass then dribble pattern (honor system, shout “done” when complete). On “go”:

  1. player (A) with ball passes to teammate (B) and then runs across to the other cone.
  2. Once pass is made, run to meet the ball, control w/positive touch and (3) dribble across to other cone, turning around it B then sends the ball to A (repeating pattern). Winner: First pair to 8 (10?) completed reps and sits down

Progressions

I tend to use long passes by keeping partners far apart, but same idea (w/more finesse touches) can be done on shorter distances.

Coaching Emphasis

Positive first touch, pace of play, and clean passing;
